Provincial Sports Directorate Committee Yet to Release Report on Turf Handover; Female Member Raises Concerns over Wrinkles
Peshawar,- The committee formed by the Provincial Sports Directorate to oversee the handover of the Lala Ayub Hockey Astro Turf has not yet issued its report. Sources reveal that a female member of the committee has raised objections regarding the wrinkles on the newly laid Astro Turf at the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium, and has submitted her concerns to the office of Director General Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
DG Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Khalid Khan formed a committee to oversee the handover of the newly constructed Astro Turf by the PSB. The committee, which is supervised by the director of the engineering wing, visited the newly laid turf at the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium prior to Ramadan.
However, the provincial sports directorate has yet to submit a report on the handover, nor have they disclosed whether the grounds have been handed over to the provincial government.
When asked about the delivery, the director stated that his role was limited to checking the documents related to the delivery, and that it was not within his authority to inspect the quality and quantity of the materials used. The situation remains unresolved, and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the committee’s report on the matter.
The turf that was laid thirteen years ago had fewer wrinkles compared to the one that was installed in December 2022, even though both were built using public tax money and awarded to PSB.
The Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium in Peshawar has seen over seventy national and international matches on the old turf, which has held up well despite its age.
In contrast, the new turf has already shown signs of wear, with artificial grass growing in some places and uneven lines forming in others, even though it has not yet been used for any matches. The new turf cost crores of rupees to build, but it has not held up as well as the old one.
