Timing over Power: The secret behind ‘Sameer Minhas’ record-breaking rise
By Nawaz Gohar ; At just 19 years old, Pakistani opener Sameer Minhas has carved out a niche for himself with a series of record-breaking performances that have caught the world’s attention. As his talent unfolds on the global stage, fans and experts alike are eager to decode the technique behind his mesmerizing strokeplay.
In a recent conversation with the media, the young prodigy dismantled the popular assumption that his success stems from brute force. Instead, he credits a combination of calculation, patience, and exquisite timing as the pillars of his batting.
Sameer’s journey began in the streets of Multan. He recalls a defining childhood moment playing against his elder brother, Arafat, where hitting a six under intense pressure sparked the self-belief that has now become his trademark.
He shot to national fame during the Under-19 Asia Cup final against India, where he played a scintillating knock of 172 runs off 113 balls. The innings was a masterclass in finesse; his shots traveled to the boundary not through power, but through a delicate touch that left former players and spectators in awe.
“I don’t believe in attacking every ball,” Sameer explained. “I play according to the situation. A few dot balls or a maiden over don’t bother me because I know once I am set, the strike rate will naturally improve.”
Coaches describe Sameer as a “composed” cricketer whose game awareness sets him apart from his peers. He views himself not as a power-hitter, but as a batsman who plays the ball late and finds the gaps with surgical precision.
With staggering statistics in U19 One Day cricket, he has become the focal point of Pakistan’s hopes for the World Cup. Despite the mounting hype, the opener remains grounded, stating that he chooses to ignore social media noise to focus solely on on-field performance.
While he aims to represent Pakistan in all three formats, he describes Test cricket as his ultimate dream. “That is where the real test of a cricketer lies,” Sameer remarked.
