Ali Zaryab Asif’s Case for Pakistan: When Does Consistency Earn an Opportunity?

Lahore: Selection debates are an inevitable part of international cricket, but every so often a player’s sustained performances make his omission difficult to ignore. In Pakistan, one such case is that of Ali Zaryab Asif, whose consistency over recent years continues to strengthen his claim for national selection.

The left-handed opener, currently representing Barnsley Woolley Cricket Club in England’s Yorkshire Southern Premier League, added another milestone to his impressive season by scoring 102 against Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club. The innings marked his fifth century of the campaign.

His statistics are striking. In just 12 league matches, Ali has accumulated 980 runs, including five centuries and four half-centuries, averaging 108.89 with a strike rate of 79.61. Performing at that level in English conditions, where seam movement and variable weather often challenge even experienced batters, underlines both technical ability and consistency.

However, Ali’s performances in England are only part of a much broader body of work. Over the past three seasons, he has been among Pakistan’s most consistent domestic batters across both red-ball and white-ball cricket. His run-scoring record has been backed by impressive performances for Pakistan Shaheens, where he averaged 92 and concluded his most recent appearance with an unbeaten century against the England Lions.

Ali also represented Pakistan at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where his performances earned him a place in the ICC Team of the Tournament alongside several future international stars, including current Indian captain Shubman Gill. While every player’s career follows a different path, the comparison highlights how sustained investment in emerging talent can shape long-term success at international level.

Selection, of course, involves far more than statistics alone. Team balance, conditions, opposition, tactical requirements and long-term planning all influence the decisions made by selectors. Nevertheless, consistent performances remain the strongest currency available to any aspiring international cricketer, and Ali Zaryab Asif has continued to build a compelling statistical case.

With Pakistan continuing its search for greater stability at the top of the batting order, Ali’s performances inevitably invite discussion. His ability to score heavily, build long innings and adapt to challenging overseas conditions reflects qualities that are highly valued in Test cricket.

Whether his opportunity comes immediately or later, his recent record suggests he deserves serious consideration. For Pakistan cricket, ensuring that outstanding domestic and developmental performances are rewarded is essential—not only for identifying the best available talent but also for reinforcing confidence in the country’s pathway from domestic cricket to the international stage.

As Pakistan’s selectors continue to evaluate options for future Test squads, Ali Zaryab Asif’s name is likely to remain part of the conversation. Based on the consistency of his performances, many observers believe he has earned the right to be seriously considered for the next step in his international journey.
