Adam Zampa names Shahid Afridi as ‘all-time favorite’, reveals why he snubbed IPL for PSL
By Nawaz Gohar ; Australian leg-spinning maestro Adam Zampa, currently representing Karachi Kings in HBL PSL 11, has opened up about his admiration for Pakistani cricket legends, the high standards of the league, and the professional reasons behind his absence from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Speaking on the ARY Podcast, Zampa named former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi as his “all-time favorite” Pakistani cricketer. Within the current Karachi Kings camp, he expressed a particular fondness for pacer Hasan Ali, noting that the dressing room atmosphere is incredibly positive with seamless harmony between local and foreign recruits.
Addressing the much-discussed topic of his IPL absence, Zampa revealed that the decision was based on a combination of financial value and franchise engagement. He disclosed that the lower compensation and a perceived lack of focus from franchises made the long time commitment of the IPL unattractive.
“I originally wanted to take a break from cricket, but the opportunity to represent Karachi Kings in the PSL came up suddenly. I accepted it and am now thoroughly enjoying the tournament,” Zampa shared.
Zampa was high in his praise for the HBL PSL, stating that the league boasts world-class bowling attacks. He remarked that the strength of the bowling across various franchises often turns seemingly straightforward matches into thrilling, last-over finishes.
The Australian star did not hold back in praising Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi.
“Whenever Shaheen bowls, you feel something special is about to happen. He has an extraordinary knack for taking wickets, and facing him is always a massive challenge,” Zampa noted.
He also mentioned his close bond with Haris Rauf, with whom he has played significant cricket, and named Nathan Ellis as his best friend in the Australian side, expressing a wish to see Ellis join him at Karachi Kings next season.
Reflecting on his career, Zampa termed the 2023 World Cup victory as the greatest moment of his life. He also recalled the electric atmosphere in the dressing room during Glenn Maxwell’s historic innings against Afghanistan as a cherished memory.
The leg-spinner recently celebrated his 34th birthday with his Karachi Kings teammates and support staff at the team hotel, further cementing his bond with the franchise.
