No compromise on safety: PCB tightens protocols following security breach involving Qalandars stars

By Nawaz Gohar ;  The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has significantly escalated security protocols for players during the ongoing HBL PSL 2026. The decision follows a security breach involving Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and all-rounder Sikandar Raza.

Under the revised directives, players are now strictly prohibited from hosting guests in their hotel rooms. An exception has been made only for immediate family members, provided that team management and security officials are notified 24 hours in advance. All other meetings must take place in designated public or business areas of the hotel and require prior official approval.

These measures were triggered by an incident on March 28, shortly before a crucial match. According to Punjab Police reports, the team’s liaison officer twice requested permission for four individuals to meet Sikandar Raza in his room.

Citing security risks, the PCB’s Security and Anti-Corruption Manager, along with PSL CEO Salman Naseer, formally denied the request. Despite the refusal, the players allegedly bypassed security personnel and escorted the guests to the hotel’s 8th floor, where they remained for over two hours. Law enforcement agencies have characterized this as a “grave disruption” of the established security framework.

Addressing the controversy, Sikandar Raza clarified that players were historically permitted to host guests in their rooms and claimed he was not fully aware of the newly implemented stringent rules. He has since accepted responsibility for the lapse.

Both the PCB and provincial authorities have issued a stern warning that no further leniency will be granted regarding security matters. These protocols are being strictly enforced to ensure the safe and successful conclusion of the tournament.
