Mirpur Test ends historic hiatus as experts warn of shrinking global Test map

the world waited 124 days for the next five-day match—marking the longest unannounced break in the format in over 50 years, barring disruptions caused by the global pandemic or ICC World Cups.
According to latest reports, the first four months of 2026 saw only one Test match played, triggering a debate over the survival of cricket’s ultimate format. Experts attribute this prolonged suspension to the overwhelming surge of T20 leagues worldwide, which have significantly cannibalized the international calendar.
The dominance of events such as the IPL, PSL, Big Bash, and SA20 has relegated Test cricket to a secondary priority in scheduling.
The report further suggests that Test cricket is increasingly becoming a luxury limited to India, England, and Australia (the “Big Three”), while other nations are deprioritizing the format due to lack of financial viability.
To safeguard the future of the red-ball game, specialists have urged governing bodies to establish permanent, dedicated windows for domestic T20 leagues.
