No captaincy comeback for Babar Azam despite PSL glory: Sources
By Nawaz Gohar ; The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has effectively ruled out the possibility of Babar Azam returning as the T20 International captain. Despite a stellar PSL 11 season where he equaled Fakhar Zaman’s record of 588 runs and led Peshawar Zalmi to the title, top board officials have denied reports of a leadership change.
Speculation had been rife regarding Babar replacing Salman Ali Agha. However, when a high-ranking PCB official was questioned about this shift, the response was a definitive “No.” Sources indicate that the board’s “think tank” is currently prioritizing the ICC Test Championship, deferring T20 strategy until the format becomes the immediate focus.
According to reliable sources, the PCB is now seeking a young leader for the Pakistan cricket team. The board intends to identify a candidate who can be groomed over time to lead the side for a long-term duration, ensuring stability and a modern approach to the game.
While Babar improved his strike rate to 146 in the recent PSL, his career T20I strike rate remains at 128. Concerns also linger over his performance in the 2024 World Cup, where he managed only 91 runs in 6 matches. Former white-ball coach Mike Hesson had previously expressed reservations about Babar’s fit in the modern T20 setup.
Under current captain Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan has secured 31 wins out of 50 matches. While Salman’s individual batting form has been inconsistent, his winning record remains a strong point.
Pakistan’s next T20 assignment is a three-match series against Sri Lanka in October, where the board’s new direction regarding youth leadership is expected to take shape.
