Pakistan’s fastest swimmer Hamza Asif eyes Commonwealth Games glory in Glasgow
Lahore: Pakistan’s premier swimmer Hamza Asif is set to represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with the national champion determined to make his mark on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages and bring international honours to Pakistan.
Widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s finest swimmers, Hamza has established himself as the country’s fastest man in the pool through years of dedication, discipline and consistent performances. His selection for the Commonwealth Games marks another significant milestone in a career built on perseverance and an unwavering passion for the sport.
Reflecting on his journey, Hamza recalled that his breakthrough came at the Senior National Swimming Championship 2023, where he captured the gold medal in the 50-metre freestyle and earned the prestigious title of Pakistan’s fastest swimmer.
“My love for swimming began when I was just six years old,” Hamza said. “At that time, we didn’t have world-class facilities or professional training, but my passion for the sport kept growing. Every day I challenged myself to improve, trained relentlessly and learned from every coach and mentor who guided me.”
Despite limited resources during his formative years, Hamza’s determination never wavered. Through years of rigorous training, often practising twice daily, he steadily climbed the national rankings before emerging as Pakistan’s leading freestyle swimmer.
His remarkable speed and consistency in the pool have earned him the nickname “The Rocket,” a reflection of his explosive performances in sprint events. “It is a privilege to represent Pakistan and inspire the next generation of swimmers,” Hamza added.
“I want young athletes to believe that no dream is too big. Hard work, discipline and self-belief can help overcome every obstacle.” Hamza now hopes to translate his domestic success onto the international stage as he prepares to compete against some of the Commonwealth’s finest swimmers in Glasgow.
Hamza also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his institution, University of Tennessee Southern, in the United States, his coaches, supporters and sponsors, particularly Rd. Rizwan Aftab Ahmed, CEO of ACTIVIT, and the BARD Foundation, for their all-out support throughout his journey.
“Representing my country at such a prestigious event is a great honour and responsibility. I request all Pakistanis and my well-wishers to keep me in their prayers so that I can perform at my very best and bring laurels to the nation,” he said.
