Abu Bakar replaces Ammad Butt as Pakistan hockey captain ahead of World Cup
By Nawaz Gohar ; In a major development ahead of the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced a significant leadership change, appointing Abu Bakar as the new captain of the national men’s hockey team in place of Ammad Shakeel Butt.
According to an official statement issued by the PHF, Abu Bakar will spearhead the national team in upcoming international fixtures. The decision was taken by PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani following recommendations from the federation’s Professional Development Committee.
The federation clarified that former skipper Ammad Shakeel Butt will remain an integral part of the squad as a senior player and will continue to contribute his expertise toward the team’s success.
The newly appointed captain, Abu Bakar, is set to lead the national side for the first time in the upcoming home series against South Korea, which began on July 30.
Expressing confidence in the restructuring, the PHF voiced optimism that Abu Bakar’s leadership, combined with the experience of senior players and the energy of young talent, will help field a stronger and more unified squad on the international stage.
This captaincy transition comes at a crucial juncture as Pakistan intensifies its preparations for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, scheduled to take place from August 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium, who are co-hosting the mega event.
The marquee tournament will feature 16 nations divided into four pools. Pakistan has been placed in Group D alongside England, Wales, and traditional rivals India. The highly anticipated blockbuster clash between Pakistan and India is scheduled for August 19.
