Preparations accelerate as Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar gear up for 2027 South Asian Games
By Nawaz Gohar ; Preparations are accelerating across Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar as Pakistan gears up to host the 14th South Asian Games from April 3 to 11, 2027, marking the return of the regional multi-sport event to the country after more than two decades.
The tournament will feature 28 sports and 346 medal events spread across 28 competition venues in the three host cities. Mobilized by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) alongside the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), organizing bodies are executing comprehensive plans covering venue upgrades, athlete accommodation, transit logistics, and medical services.
Arrangements recently underwent formal evaluation during the Executive Committee meeting of the South Asia Olympic Council (SAOC) in Islamabad on August 23–24. Representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka attended in person, while Indian delegates participated virtually. Following operational briefings on Lahore and Peshawar, the delegation conducted on-site inspections of primary facilities at the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.
“Hosting the South Asian Games after more than twenty years is a matter of immense national pride and a significant operational responsibility,” said PSB Director General Yawar Hussain during the facility tour. “We are executing targeted maintenance, rehabilitation, and infrastructure upgrades across all sites to ensure world-class training and competition environments for visiting delegations.”
Regional Olympic leadership expressed satisfaction with the foundational progress while providing observations to refine venue readiness ahead of 2027.
Beyond serving as a proving ground for emerging local talent competing before home crowds, the event offers Pakistan a high-profile platform to demonstrate its event management capabilities, sporting infrastructure, and cultural hospitality—fostering broader regional diplomacy and leaving a lasting legacy for the nation’s youth sports ecosystem.
