Pakistan-backed panel secures historic victory in Asian Cricket Council elections
Nawaz Gohar ; A panel supported by Pakistan achieved a major diplomatic and administrative victory at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) elections in Bangkok, sweeping all three contested board director seats against candidates backed by India.
The elections took place during the ACC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where representatives from across Asia gathered to decide key organizational positions and outline upcoming continental tournaments.
The Pakistan-backed panel, led under the stewardship of ACC President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, featured candidates representing Qatar, Singapore, and the Maldives.
All three candidates emerged victorious in a closely contested vote against the rival panel supported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which was represented at the meeting by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla.
This marks the first time since the inception of the Asian Cricket Council that a Pakistan-supported panel has won all contested seats on the board. Inside sources have cited the outcome as a significant achievement for Mohsin Naqvi and a clear signal of Pakistan’s growing diplomatic influence within regional cricket administration.
Beyond the election results, the ACC AGM addressed several operational agendas: Men’s Asia Cup: The council reviewed preparations for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup scheduled to take place in Bangladesh, with Sylhet, Mirpur, and Chattogram proposed as the primary hosting venues.
Women’s Asia Cup: Delegates discussed logistical arrangements for the upcoming Women’s T20 Asia Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Financial Review: The council formally reviewed and discussed the Asian Cricket Council’s annual budget.
