BANDUNG: Riding high on confidence after their landmark continental success earlier this summer, the Pakistan national football team is putting the final touches on its tactical preparations as the Shaheens prepare to launch their FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign against regional powerhouse Thailand.
The highly anticipated opener, scheduled to kick off at 4:00 PM local time (2:00 PM PST) on Saturday, marks a historic milestone for Pakistan—representing the senior men’s squad’s inaugural appearance in an official FIFA-organized regional tournament.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Bandung, Pakistan head coach Nolberto Solano highlighted the strategic value of competing against higher-ranked Asian sides such as Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
“We view this prestigious tournament as a crucial benchmark to test our mettle against top-tier competition,” said Solano. “Asian football is evolving rapidly, and every team in this tournament boasts incredible talent. Our strategy is to build step-by-step, prove our growth as a national team, and push our boundaries as far as possible.”
Pakistan enters the tournament backed by strong momentum, having lifted the Diamond Jubilee International Tournament trophy in the Maldives—the country’s first standalone international title in 74 years. However, the technical caliber of the FIFA ASEAN Cup presents a significantly tougher test for the emerging squad.
To bolster the defense, the squad was bolstered by the arrival of Azerbaijan-based defender Easah Suliman, who joined the team during their official pre-match training session at the match venue.
National team captain Abdullah Iqbal echoed his manager’s optimism, urging his teammates to seize the opportunity: “This is a massive platform for our players to showcase what we are capable of against teams operating at another level. The morale in the camp is high, and every player is determined to leave everything on the pitch.”
