PHF President Mohyuddin Wani unveils strategic roadmap for Pakistan hockey revival

By Nawaz Gohar ;  Mohyuddin Wani, the President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing the nation’s hockey landscape.

Aligning his efforts with the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Wani has announced a comprehensive strategic blueprint aimed at restoring Pakistan hockey to its former global prestige and competitive excellence.

Wani articulated this vision during a high-level consultative meeting with key office-bearers of the District Hockey Association (DHA) Rawalpindi. The session, which drew notable figures including senior sports journalist Zulfiqar Baig, DHA President Zaheer-ul-Haq, Secretary Tahir Shirazi, and Treasurer Muhammad Zahid, focused on the structural shifts required to move the sport forward.

At the core of Wani’s revival plan is a concerted effort to mobilize grassroots development. The PHF has devised a roadmap that prioritizes the promotion of hockey at the school and college levels across the country. By establishing specialized boys’ and girls’ development programs,

the federation intends to identify and nurture young talent under the guidance of qualified, professional coaches. Wani highlighted that this focus on youth development in Rawalpindi and other major cities is essential for building a sustainable talent pipeline that will feed into the national squad.

Beyond domestic development, Wani underscored the importance of creating a competitive ecosystem. He confirmed that the federation is actively working to organize a series of both national and international hockey events. These initiatives, bolstered by strategic sponsorship support, are designed to provide Pakistani players with the high-level exposure and competitive intensity required to excel on the global stage.

Addressing the stakeholders, Wani struck a chord of unity and inclusivity, declaring that the doors of the Pakistan Hockey Federation are open to every individual, expert, or enthusiast who is genuinely working toward the betterment of the sport. He emphasized that the restoration of Pakistan’s hockey legacy is a colossal task that demands a collective, national effort rather than isolated initiatives.

The meeting also served as a platform to announce immediate upcoming activities. DHA President Zaheer-ul-Haq detailed plans for a special memorial hockey event dedicated to the former PHF President, Pervez Aslam Kayani. Set to be hosted at the Shahnaz Sheikh Hockey Stadium,

the event will welcome a distinguished guest list, including PHF President Mohyuddin Wani, former Senator Chaudhry Tanveer Khan, and Member National Assembly Barrister Daniyal Chaudhry, who will attend as chief guests.

In his concluding remarks, Wani assured the association of his full support, reinforcing his pledge to facilitate all initiatives that contribute to the improvement and promotion of hockey.

As the federation moves from planning to execution, the emphasis remains on transparency, grassroots mobilization, and a unified vision to bring the hockey stick back to the hands of world-class champions.
