Rain, resilience, and redemption: Minhas’ masterclass topples Rizwan’s Rawalpindiz
By Nawaz Gohar ; In a high-octane encounter that blended raw youth power with tactical masterclasses, Islamabad United dismantled Rawalpindiz by three wickets at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.
On a surface slicked by pre-match showers, the United brigade transformed a potentially tricky 157-run chase into a clinical sprint, crossing the finish line in just the 15th over to solidify their dominance in PSL 11.
While the veterans provided the foundation, the night belonged to the sensational Samir Minhas. The young prodigy played an innings of breathtaking audacity, bludgeoning 70 runs off a mere 36 deliveries. His “scorched-earth” approach left the Rawalpindiz bowlers with no room for error, as he found boundaries with surgical precision.
Support roles were played to perfection by the seasoned Mark Chapman (24) and Haider Ali (26), while Mohammad Faik’s 19 ensured that despite losing seven wickets in the pursuit of quick runs, United never lost their grip on the required rate.
Earlier, after a 40-minute rain delay that tested the nerves of both camps, Islamabad United skipper Shadab Khan won the toss and elected to field. It proved a shrewd decision.
Rawalpindiz managed to post 156/7, anchored by a resilient Kamran Ghulam, who struck a composed 50. Dane Forster (44) and Abdullah Fazal (23) provided the necessary muscle to the middle order, but they struggled to break free from the shackles of United’s disciplined bowling unit.
Richard Gleeson, Salman Irshad, and the ever-reliable Faheem Ashraf were the pick of the bowlers, snaring two wickets apiece and exploiting the damp conditions to perfection.
Post-match, the spotlight remained on the contrasting fortunes of the two skippers. Shadab Khan, who rested Salman Mirza and Andries Gous for this clash, was quick to credit the unsung heroes of the night.
“The ground staff are the real heroes of the PSL,” Shadab remarked. “To make this outfield playable after such heavy rain was a monumental task. We knew the wet ball would make it difficult for spinners, making the chase a tactical advantage.”
Conversely, Rawalpindiz captain Mohammad Rizwan, who raised eyebrows by replacing ace pacer Naseem Shah with Jalat Khan, remained optimistic despite the setback. “Expectations are always sky-high, and while tonight wasn’t our night, I am confident we will find our winning rhythm again very soon,” Rizwan stated.
The victory catapults Islamabad United further up the table, fueled by a blend of tactical flexibility and the emergence of Samir Minhas as a legitimate PSL superstar. For the Rawalpindiz side, the search for consistency continues as the league heads into its most critical phase.
