Sehan rewards Lyari’s top sports performers
KARACHI, Karachi’s locality of Lyari is synonymous with sports talent. This fact was aptly highlighted at an appreciation ceremony held here to celebrate the achievements of gifted young sportspersons from Lyari.
The ceremony hosted by Sehan, an organization that supports under-privileged sportspersons from Lyari, saw 18 high-performing athletes and coaches receive medals and cash prizes.
The athletes belonging to various sports including football, gymnastics and boxing won several medals at the recently-held National Games in Karachi.
“We at Sehan believe that these bright, confident and talented young boys and girls are the future of Pakistan,” said Dr Naseem Shekhani, President of Sehan.
Dr Sheikhani, who is a veteran doctor based in St Louis (USA) is at the forefront of a campaign aimed at enabling talented young sportspersons by giving them opportunities to exhibit their talents.
“We have been raising funds for these kids and are delighted that with the little help we have managed to give them these youngsters have achieved big feats that include several gold, silver and bronze medals at the National Games and other major events,” he said.
Among the athletes and coaches who were awarded at an impressive ceremony held at the T2F in Karachi were former international footballer Javed Arab, who runs the JAFA football academy, legendary gymnastics coach Ustad Barkat Baloch, goalkeeping coach Naeem Jan and boxing coach Summiya Rafiq.
The sportsperson who were given rewards included: Zainab Khudabaksh, Sauda Rauf, Shaeba Sherdil, Fatima Naz, Aqsa Dawood and Marwa Arab (football), Gohar Taj and Maryam Akbar (boxing), Shahjahan Barkat, Shahzad Ali, Abdul Samad, Sauda Rashid, Sonia and Ayesha Sajid (Gymnastics).
“For an athlete it is a great feeling if you are appreciated,” said Shahjahan Barkat, who won five gold medals at the 2025 National Games.
Also present at the well-attended ceremony were Dr Zahid Jamal, President of Sehan Pakistan and Umair Iqbal, Board member of Sehan USA.
