Spirit of Cricket under Strain: Handshake snub highlights rising tensions in India-Bangladesh U19 clash

By Nawaz Gohar ;  The “Spirit of Cricket” took a backseat during the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 match between India and Bangladesh, as an icy exchange at the toss raised serious questions about sportsmanship.

In the Saturday fixture, the frostiness between the two sides was palpable. During the traditional toss ceremony, Indian captain Ayush Mhatre appeared to avoid the customary handshake with Bangladeshi vice-captain Jawad Abrar. The atmosphere remained tense as Abrar, leading in place of the ill regular skipper Azizul Hakim, and his teammate Tamim, reportedly exited the scene without the usual formalities, leaving spectators and cricket circles stunned.

Cricket analysts noted that such “cold war” behavior, traditionally synonymous with high-stakes India-Pakistan encounters in tournaments like the Asia Cup, has now seemingly seeped into the India-Bangladesh rivalry with unprecedented intensity.

Observers suggest this friction cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader diplomatic and cricketing standoff between the two nations. Bangladesh has already formally refused to tour India for the T20 World Cup scheduled for next month, citing security concerns and requesting the ICC to shift their matches to a neutral venue.

The rift has been further exacerbated by the Bangladesh government’s recent ban on IPL 2026 broadcasts. This move followed the controversial exclusion of star pacer Mustafizur Rahman from his IPL squad, a decision reportedly influenced by the BCCI.

Analysts warn that the “chill” on the cricket field is no longer just about the sport but is a reflection of deteriorating diplomatic ties. If the current trajectory continues, the distance between the two cricket boards, and their young athletes, threatens to widen even further.
