Training Boycott: National hockey players stand firm against PHF over unpaid dues

By Nawaz Gohar : Tensions within Pakistan’s national hockey camp reached a breaking point as negotiations between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and national players ended in a stalemate. The dispute centers on the non-payment of long-standing daily allowances, leading players to officially boycott all training sessions.

According to internal sources, a meeting was convened by senior PHF officials to persuade the athletes to resume their training. However, the session reportedly turned into a “heated exchange” as frustrated players confronted officials regarding their financial grievances. While the PHF high command urged the players to continue the camp in the national interest, the players remained steadfast in their refusal to take the field without pay.

The situation escalated to the point where several players began packing their belongings, intending to leave the camp and return home. A total walkout was only narrowly averted through the intervention of the team management, who acted as mediators to de-escalate the conflict. Although the players agreed to remain physically present at the camp, they made it clear that they would not participate in any physical training or tactical drills.

The PHF’s Ultimatum and Players’ Response In an attempt to resolve the crisis, the PHF has issued a formal assurance that all outstanding dues will be cleared by next Friday.

Despite this promise, the players have adopted a “no pay, no play” policy. A representative for the players stated that while they respect the management’s request to stay at the facility, training will only resume once the funds are reflected in their accounts.

This deadlock comes at a critical juncture as the national team prepares for upcoming international fixtures. The lack of active training is expected to significantly impact the team’s fitness and coordination, further highlighting the deep-seated financial challenges currently plaguing the federation.
