Asian Beach Games: Pakistan secure four medals amidst stellar wrestling performance
By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistani athletes showcased an outstanding performance at the Asian Beach Games held in Sanya, China, securing a total of four medals. The national contingent demonstrated exceptional skill, particularly in the wrestling and kabaddi disciplines, to bring laurels to the country.
Wrestling: Silver Linings for Inam Butt and Asadullah In the wrestling arena, Pakistan’s premier wrestler Inam Butt secured a silver medal in the 90kg weight category. Butt maintained his dominant form throughout the tournament, defeating Bahrain’s Magomed Sharipov in the quarter-final and Mongolia’s Turbold Ganbold in the semi-final. However, he fell short in the final against Iran’s Amir Hossein Kavousi.
In the 80kg category, Asadullah displayed remarkable prowess to reach the final. He defeated India’s Sachin Mor in a high-stakes quarter-final and outclassed China’s Feng Lu in the semi-final. In the gold medal bout, he was defeated 0-3 by Iran’s Ali Gholami, ultimately taking home the silver medal.
In the 70kg category, Muhammad Abdullah earned a bronze medal. After defeating his Thai opponent in the quarter-final, he faced a tough loss against India’s Siddharth in the semi-final, eventually securing third place on the podium.
Overall Performance and Kabaddi Success Pakistan concluded the tournament with a total of four medals: two silver and one bronze in wrestling, and an additional bronze medal in Beach Kabaddi. The Kabaddi team’s performance was lauded for its consistency, contributing significantly to the national tally and highlighting Pakistan’s diversity in beach sports.
Iranian Dominance The Men’s Beach Wrestling event was dominated by the Iranian contingent, which secured gold medals in all four weight categories. The gold medalists included Ali Akbar Zaroudi (70kg), Ali Gholami (80kg), Amir Hossein Kavousi (90kg), and Seyed Amir Reza Sahraei Mahalli (+90kg), who proved their superiority by sweeping the finals.
PWF Leadership Commends Athletes Arshad Sattar, President of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF), extended his heartfelt congratulations to the players, coaches, and officials. He praised the spirit and determination of the athletes, stating:
“Our wrestlers have raised the Pakistani flag high through their magnificent performance, making the entire nation proud with their achievements on the international stage.”
