Pakistan secure Hockey World Cup berth after eight-year hiatus
By Nawaz Gohar ; In a performance reminiscent of their golden era, four-time world champions Pakistan officially ended an eight-year drought by qualifying for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
The Green Shirts secured their ticket in spectacular fashion, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Japan 4-3 in a pulse-pounding semi-final on Friday. The victory ensures Pakistan’s return to the sport’s grandest stage for the first time since 2018, sparking celebrations across the hockey fraternity.
The high-stakes fixture began with Pakistan on the front foot. Captain Ammad Butt ignited the engine in the 9th minute, clinical finishing a sensational field goal to give Pakistan an early 1-0 lead. However, Japan—known for their disciplined structure—fought back, with Ryoma Ooka finding the equalizer in the 21st minute.
The momentum shifted heavily toward Japan in the third quarter. In a frantic spell of dominance, Shota Yamada and Koji Yamasaki struck in quick succession, leaving Pakistan staring at a daunting 3-1 deficit heading into the final period.
With their World Cup dreams hanging by a thread, Pakistan unleashed a breathtaking offensive in the final ten minutes. The comeback was sparked by Abu Mahmood in the 52nd minute, followed by a clinical strike from Sufyan Khan in the 55th.
The atmospheric SCA Stadium reached a fever pitch in the 57th minute when Afraz hammered home the winner, completing a stunning three-goal blitz in just five minutes. Despite a desperate late surge from Japan, Pakistan’s defense held firm under immense pressure until the final whistle.
This victory marks Pakistan’s fourth consecutive win in the qualifiers, capping an flawless run that included: A gritty 5-4 opening win against China. A tactical 5-3 masterclass over Malaysia. A commanding 4-2 triumph over Austria.
While the primary mission of qualification is complete, the Green Shirts now eye silverware. Pakistan is set to face England in the tournament final this Saturday. A win would not only provide a trophy but also a massive psychological boost as they begin their formal preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
