A dark day for Pakistan sports: Is merit limited to papers only?
Nawaz Gohar ; It is with deep regret that we report that Pakistan has lost a guaranteed gold medal at the Asian Beach Games due to incompetence and poor selection.
Sheroz Khan (High Jumper): Pakistan’s record holder for the last 5 to 6 years. This superstar, who breaks records every year, is currently in peak form with a seasonal best of 2.10 meters. The Asian Beach Games Result: A Filipino athlete won the gold medal with a jump of merely 2.05 meters.
The Question is: When we had a 2.10-meter jumper available, why was he not included in the Pakistani contingent? On what basis was a player ignored who is consistently breaking records?
This is not just an injustice to Sheroz Khan; it is an injustice to the flag of Pakistan. We lament the lack of medals, yet when medal-winning athletes are standing right in front of us, our federations and selectors turn a blind eye.
How can we promote sports in Pakistan by keeping heroes like Sheroz Khan at home? The relevant authorities must answer for this grave mistake.
