Spain reclaims World No. 1 spot in FIFA Rankings following 2026 World Cup win
By Nawaz Gohar ; Fresh off their 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph, Spain has returned to the top of the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, pushing former world champions Argentina down to second place.
According to the latest rankings released by FIFA, the Spanish squad—who defeated Argentina 1–0 in extra time in the World Cup final—has reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking for the first time since January.
France remains in third place, with England holding steady at fourth, despite England securing victory over France in the third-place playoff match.
Brazil climbed one spot to fifth, while Morocco made history by reaching sixth place—the national team’s highest-ever position in the FIFA rankings.
Portugal, who suffered an early exit in the Round of 16, dropped two spots to seventh. Meanwhile, Belgium advanced to eighth place, and the Netherlands fell one spot to ninth.
Mexico surged four spots to break into the top ten, while Norway emerged as the biggest climber in this edition, leaping 12 places to 19th following their quarterfinal run at the World Cup.
In contrast, Germany slipped out of the top ten down to 12th place. Croatia fell to 13th, while Italy, who failed to qualify for the World Cup tournament, dropped to 15th position.
Among African nations, Tunisia experienced the sharpest decline, dropping 12 places to 57th. Conversely, Egypt moved up five spots to 24th, and South American side Paraguay gained seven places to reach 34th.
Additionally, Cape Verde, having reached the Round of 32 at the World Cup, advanced three spots to 64th, while Ghana climbed eight positions to 65th.
