AFC Asian Cup 2027 draw rescheduled to May 9 amid regional tensions
By Nawaz Gohar ; The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially announced that the group stage draw for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ will now take place on May 9 in Riyadh.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for April 11. However, the date has been revised in light of escalating tensions in the Middle East and regional instability, which have caused significant disruptions to the international sporting calendar.
According to the AFC, the decision aims to ensure the full participation of all member nations and stakeholders. Ongoing regional volatility—particularly following recent airstrikes in the region—has led to airspace closures and travel restrictions, creating substantial logistical hurdles for international delegates.
The high-profile event will be hosted in the historic At-Turaif district of Diriyah, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site. The AFC clarified that the new date was selected following extensive consultations with the host nation, Saudi Arabia, and relevant member associations to guarantee a fair and stable environment for the ceremony.
This marks the first time Saudi Arabia will host the continental flagship championship, which features 24 premier teams from across Asia. The tournament is scheduled to run from January 7 to February 5, 2027, promising a month of elite-level football as nations vie for the prestigious Asian crown.
To date, 23 of the 24 competing slots have been secured. The final spot will be determined via a playoff between Lebanon and Yemen on June 4. Once finalized, the teams will be divided into six groups of four during the draw.
Defending champions Qatar, alongside continental giants such as four-time winners Japan, South Korea, Iran, Jordan, Australia, and Uzbekistan, have already qualified and are considered top contenders for the title. Despite the prevailing regional uncertainty, organizers have reaffirmed that preparations remain on track and administrative arrangements are being finalized at an accelerated pace.
