Legendary Olympian Samiullah Khan appointed Chief Selector of national hockey team
By Nawaz Gohar ; The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has officially announced the appointment of legendary former Olympian Samiullah Khan, famously known as the “Flying Horse,” as the Chief Selector for the national men’s hockey team.
This crucial decision was made following the recommendations of the PHF Professional Development Committee, which includes icons such as Hassan Sardar and Islahuddin Siddiqui.
This appointment is a key component of a comprehensive plan to revive hockey in Pakistan. The federation has devised a coordinated strategy to strengthen the sport at the grassroots level, enhance the high-performance training system, and regain a competitive position on the global stage.
Key highlights of the PHF Hockey Roadmap include:
Establishing a modern and integrated team structure comprising the selection committee, head coach, and support staff.
Preparing an annual events calendar for national and international competitions.
Enhancing the technical training and capacity building of coaches, umpires, and officials.
Implementing organized talent hunt programs to discover and nurture young talent.
The federation is also placing special emphasis on reviving hockey activities in schools and colleges. Along with reactivating inter-school and inter-collegiate tournaments, work is underway to establish a modern High-Performance Center to provide world-class facilities to players.
On this occasion, the PHF President expressed his resolve, stating that bringing Pakistan hockey back to its former glory is his top priority. He believes that Samiullah Khan’s appointment as Chief Selector will lead to significant improvements in the team’s performance and help the national side reclaim its lost prestige.
The PHF will implement this roadmap in phases, with the cooperation of the Pakistan Sports Board and the International Hockey Federation (FIH), to ensure Pakistan emerges once again as a formidable force in global hockey.
