Political turmoil erupts over potential deployment of US agents at Italy Winter Olympics

By Nawaz Gohar ;  A intense nationwide debate has been sparked in Italy over the inclusion of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in security operations for next month’s Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

According to sources at the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)—the investigative arm of ICE—will provide security cooperation to protect the U.S. delegation during the Games.

U.S. diplomatic sources stated that the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) will lead security matters related to the U.S., while other federal agencies will provide assistance, as has been the practice in past Olympic events.

However, it was clarified that ICE does not conduct immigration enforcement operations abroad, and all security measures will remain under Italian authority.

Despite these assurances, the announcement has triggered a political backlash in Italy. The center-left opposition raised objections to the potential presence of ICE, prompting Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to state that the government is unaware of any ICE agent deployment and that Italian agencies alone will handle Olympic security.

Further confusion arose when Attilio Fontana, the President of Lombardy, claimed that ICE agents would provide protection for U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Fontana later clarified that his statement was hypothetical and that if ICE were to have any role, it would be strictly limited to the personal security of U.S. officials.

The controversy intensified after footage surfaced showing two journalists from the Italian state broadcaster, RAI, being threatened by ICE agents in Minneapolis.

The widespread deployment of ICE within the United States, coupled with recent protests and the deaths of two American citizens, has also heightened international concern.

The Olympics are scheduled to take place in Northern Italy from February 6 to 22, while the debate over security arrangements continues to escalate.
