Abrar, Saim shine as Pakistan down South Africa to take ODI series 2-1
Report By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistan clinched the three-match ODI series 2–1 after a commanding seven-wicket victory over South Africa at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, marking their third consecutive bilateral series win against the Proteas. The triumph injected fresh confidence into the national side, signalling a promising new chapter for Pakistan cricket.
The heroes of the day were Abrar Ahmed and Saim Ayub, whose exceptional performances defined the match. Spinner Abrar dismantled South Africa’s middle order with a mesmerizing spell, claiming 4 wickets for just 27 runs, including a double-strike that turned the contest decisively in Pakistan’s favour. His two brilliant overs reduced the visitors to 143 all out, leaving Pakistan in complete control.
In response, young opener Saim Ayub displayed maturity beyond his years. After a cautious start, he shifted gears to play a fluent and confident knock of an unbeaten 77 off 70 balls, steering Pakistan home with authority. His innings reflected his growing composure and aggressive flair, cementing his place as one of Pakistan’s brightest batting prospects.
Captain Babar Azam contributed 27 runs, while Mohammad Rizwan finished the chase with an assured 32 not out. However, Fakhar Zaman’s first-ball duck once again raised questions about his form and consistency.
On the bowling front, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Agha Salman provided vital support to Abrar, taking two wickets each. Agha’s early breakthrough helped tilt the momentum Pakistan’s way. For South Africa, only Quinton de Kock offered resistance, scoring 53 runs to complete 7,000 career ODI runs, but his dismissal triggered a collapse.
This victory holds added significance for Pakistan, as the team’s young generation stepped up with confidence and purpose. Players like Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, and Agha Salman are no longer seen as experimental selections but as integral pillars of Pakistan’s future.
If Pakistan continue with the same unity, consistency, and strategic approach, they could pose a serious challenge in next year’s major tournaments. The win in Faisalabad was more than just a match result; it was a statement: a new era of Pakistan cricket has begun.
