Gulzar “Gullu” Butt clinches Rustam-e-Pakistan title in Faisalabad

By Nawaz Gohar : In a display of sheer strength and traditional technique, Gulzar Butt (popularly known as Gullu Butt), representing the Pakistan Army and hailing from Gujranwala, has officially been crowned Rustam-e-Pakistan.

The prestigious title, considered the highest honor in traditional Pakistani wrestling (Dangal), was decided in a final bout where Butt defeated Muhammad Adnan Tyranwala of WAPDA.

The final showdown took place in Noor Pur, Faisalabad, under the auspices of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation. The event marked the culmination of a rigorous biennial selection process that filters the best talent from grassroots, district, and provincial levels.

In a match that captivated thousands of spectators, Gulzar Butt secured a decisive victory by pinning his opponent, Adnan Tyranwala, to the mat (Chaar Shaanay Chit). Interestingly, both finalists represent the wrestling powerhouse of Gujranwala, further cementing the city’s reputation as the “City of Wrestlers.”

Gulzar Butt is a protégé of world-renowned champion Inam Butt and trains at the historic Jinnah Health Wrestling Club (Jinnah Sports Club) in Gujranwala. While his roots lie in the traditional mud pits (Akhara), he has successfully transitioned into international mat wrestling, mastering freestyle rules.

His career is decorated with several historic milestones:
Record Breaker: At age 15, he became the youngest gold medalist in the history of the Senior National Wrestling Championship.

International Success: He recently secured a Bronze Medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in the 97kg freestyle category, defeating Turkey’s Rifat Gedik.

National Legend: Over a career spanning two decades (1991–2010), he has consistently medaled in national games and represented Pakistan in over 55 countries.

The event was attended by several high-profile figures, including Member of the National Assembly Raja Danyal Ahmed, President of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation Chaudhry Arshad Sattar Aulakh, and General Secretary Inam Butt.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary “Great Gama,” Gulzar Butt remains humble despite his skyrocketing success. Following his international achievements in 2025 and his recent domestic triumph, the champion dedicated his medals to the “defenders and martyrs of the motherland.”
