Playing with the Game: How nepotism and administrative failure are ruining Pakistan cricket

By Nawaz Gohar ;  In Pakistan, cricket is far more than just a sport; it is the heartbeat of millions. Yet, over the recent past, it appears the nation’s most beloved game has been left at the mercy of an incompetent few, driven by self-interest.

A continuous decline in international standings coupled with humiliating, consecutive defeats has left passionate fans devastated. Alarmingly, the true architects of this downfall remain firmly entrenched in their positions, continuing to gamble with the future of Pakistan cricket.

The chaotic upheaval witnessed within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in recent years remains unprecedented in global sports administration. Whimsical, overnight replacements of team captains, coaches, and selection committees have become the norm. When crucial decisions are dictated by drawing-room politics, personal favoritism, and political clout rather than on-field performance, the team’s current dismal state becomes an inevitability.

By systematically ignoring top-tier talent from domestic cricket to reward well-connected individuals and players backed by specific lobbies, the board has crippled the team. As a result, Pakistan is now suffering embarrassing defeats even on home soil against relatively inexperienced opposition.

Administrative Incompetence and the Accountability Vacuum
Every time the national team crashes out of a major tournament, top board officials orchestrate a familiar rhetoric promising a “major surgery.” However, this administrative scalpel invariably falls only upon the players or the coaching staff. The core policymakers and high-ranking executives never accept accountability for their own strategic failures.

Instead of formulating sustainable, long-term blueprints to revive Pakistan cricket, the management relies on temporary, cosmetic fixes. This lack of vision has bred a deep sense of insecurity among the players, leaving them mentally shackled and unable to perform fearlessly.

The outrage among Pakistani cricket fans has reached a boiling point, echoing across social media platforms and empty stadium stands. Devoted supporters firmly believe that no revival is possible until politically appointed officials—who lack even a basic understanding of the game—are replaced by seasoned professionals and former cricketers.

The elements responsible for dragging Pakistan cricket to this historic nadir must realize they are playing with national prestige. If this destructive cycle continues unchecked, the day is not far when the glory of Pakistan cricket will be reduced to nothing more than a tale of the past.
