T20 World Cup: India stay alive with emphatic win over Zimbabwe
By Nawaz Gohar ; Commanding half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya, followed by a disciplined bowling display, powered India to a comprehensive 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in a must-win ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights clash at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.
The win — India’s first in the Super Eights stage — kept their semi-final hopes firmly alive while simultaneously ending Zimbabwe’s campaign. The result also confirmed South Africa national cricket team’s progression to the knockout stage from Group 1.
India’s final Super Eights fixture against the West Indies cricket team in Kolkata on Sunday has now turned into a virtual quarter-final, with both sides sitting on two points from two matches.
Chasing a daunting 257-run target, Zimbabwe fought hard but could only muster 184/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Brian Bennett stood tall amid the carnage, producing a magnificent unbeaten 97 off 59 deliveries, laced with eight fours and six sixes. Despite his valiant effort, the Chevrons never truly threatened India’s towering total.
Bennett stitched useful stands with Tadiwanashe Marumani (20) and captain Sikandar Raza (31), but the lack of sustained partnerships proved costly.
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh spearheaded India’s bowling effort with impressive figures of 3/24 in four overs. Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Dube, and Axar Patel chipped in with a wicket apiece to maintain control.
Earlier, Raza’s decision to field first backfired spectacularly as India piled up a mammoth 256/4 in 20 overs. India’s new opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided a fiery start, racing to 48 inside four overs before Blessing Muzarabani dismissed Samson for a brisk 24 off 15 balls.
Sharma then joined forces with Ishan Kishan, and the duo added 72 runs in quick time to wrest complete control. Kishan struck 38 off 24 balls before Raza broke the stand.
Having endured three consecutive ducks earlier in the tournament, Sharma rediscovered his touch in style, smashing a 30-ball 55 studded with four sixes and four fours. He also shared a rapid 30-run stand with captain Suryakumar Yadav, who dazzled with a 13-ball 33 cameo.
The finishing flourish came courtesy of an unbeaten 84-run fifth-wicket partnership between Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. Pandya unleashed a blistering 50* off just 23 deliveries, hammering four sixes and two fours, while Varma matched the tempo with a scintillating 44* off 16 balls. For Zimbabwe, Muzarabani, Raza, Tinotenda Maposa, and Richard Ngarava claimed a wicket each, but the damage had long been done.
