India’s position has become uncertain following their defeat to South Africa, while Pakistan finds itself in a similarly precarious situation.Sri Lanka has already been eliminated from the event after their loss to New Zealand, and Afghanistan failed to reach the Super 8 stage altogether.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh did not participate in the tournament as a mark of protest. For Pakistan to stay alive, they must defeat Sri Lanka in their final match while keeping a close eye on other results. India faces Zimbabwe and the West Indies in their upcoming fixtures.
Should the West Indies manage to defeat South Africa, they too could force their way into the semifinal race. The Net Run Rate (NRR) remains a massive hurdle for the Green Shirts; New Zealand currently boasts a formidable $+3.050$, while Pakistan languishes at $-0.461$.
Consequently, the national team not only needs to win but must also significantly improve its run rate. Pakistan’s hopes hinge on England defeating New Zealand in their final group match. If New Zealand defeats England in Pallekele this Friday, they will secure their spot in the semifinals, rendering Saturday’s clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka a mere formality.
