Current policies pose an existential threat to Indian cricket, Navjot Singh Sidhu warns BCCI

By Nawaz Gohar ; Renowned former Indian cricketer and veteran commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu has issued a scathing critique of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), warning that its current administrative stance could lead to India’s global isolation in the sporting arena.

Speaking during a high-profile broadcast of the program “Kaun Banega Champion,” Sidhu did not mince words, describing the recent decisions by the Indian cricket leadership as a “mockery of the game” and calling for an immediate shift in diplomatic strategy.

Sidhu emphasized that international cricket requires a delicate balance of tolerance and diplomatic acumen. He criticized the contradictory nature of the board’s recent interactions with neighboring cricket boards.

“You cannot hurl abuses and criticism at a nation and then expect them to simply accept an invitation to play at your home ground,” Sidhu remarked, referring to the escalating tensions within the Asian cricket circuit.

The former opening batsman highlighted Bangladesh’s reported reluctance to travel to India for upcoming fixtures as a significant red flag. He asserted that such a refusal from a traditionally friendly neighbor indicates deep-rooted flaws in India’s current cricketing diplomacy.

According to Sidhu, this is no longer just an emotional or bilateral dispute. “It is a massive cricketing alert,” he stated. He pointed out a shifting power dynamic where Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, all Full Members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), now appear to be aligning on a single platform against India’s hegemony.

Sidhu, known for his deep understanding of both the game and regional politics, warned that the BCCI’s “stubbornness” could trigger a domino effect. He laid out a sobering scenario for the future of Indian cricket:

Loss of Hosting Rights: Sidhu warned that if even four ICC Full Member nations refuse to participate in tournaments hosted by India, the ICC will be contractually and legally obligated to move major global events to neutral venues.

The ICC’s Position: He noted that while India is a financial powerhouse, the ICC must maintain the integrity of its world events. If the environment is deemed “unplayable” or “unwelcoming” by multiple nations, India’s status as a premier host remains at risk.

Closing his segment with a firm message to the Indian cricket authorities, Sidhu urged them to set aside political egos for the sake of the sport. “The time has come to come to your senses,” Sidhu concluded. “Otherwise, Indian cricket will fall victim to global isolation due to its own rigid policies. In the end, it is the game of cricket that will suffer, not the politics.”
