Pakistan blanks China 3-0 in U18 Asia Cup Hockey opener

By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistan’s future hockey stars made a roaring statement of intent at the Men’s U18 Asia Cup 2026, dismantling a resilient Chinese side 3-0 in their Group B opener at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

The clinical victory not only secured three crucial points but also propelled the Green Shirts to the summit of the Group B standings, edging past regional rivals Bangladesh on goal difference.

From the opening whistle, Pakistan showcased a brand of aggressive, high-press hockey that left the Chinese defense scrambling. The early pressure paid dividends just six minutes into the game. Sneaking deep into the striking circle, Muhammad Usman unleashed a beautifully struck field goal to break the deadlock and put Pakistan ahead.

Before China could regroup, Pakistan struck again. In the 11th minute, Adeel capped off a brilliant team build-up with a superb field effort of his own, doubling the advantage and leaving the opposition stunned by an early two-goal cushion.

While the attackers set the tone early on, it was Pakistan’s defensive wall that ensured the advantage remained intact. China earned a dangerous penalty corner in the dying moments of the first quarter, but Pakistan’s penalty corner defense read the play perfectly to clear the threat.

The second and third quarters morphed into an intense tactical battle. Despite end-to-end attacking runs from both sides, neither team could breach the goal line. China fought back fiercely in the final quarter, securing two more penalty corners. However, Pakistan’s defensive unit stood tall, frustrating the Chinese drag-flickers and keeping a clean sheet.

With China overextending in a desperate bid to launch a late comeback, Pakistan capitalized on their discipline. In the penultimate minute of the match, the Green Shirts earned their lone penalty corner of the game. Yasir Salman made it count, firing a powerful strike past the Chinese goalkeeper to put the final exclamation mark on a comprehensive 3-0 triumph.

Pakistan won’t have much time to celebrate. They face a quick turnaround as they take on a formidable Malaysia on Sunday, before wrapping up their group-stage assignments against Bangladesh on June 3. If Saturday’s performance was any indication, this young Pakistani contingent has the grit and tactical discipline to go all the way.
