Security Concerns Cast Shadow Over Bangladesh’s Participation in 2026 T20 World Cup in India
By Nawaz Gohar ; The International Cricket Council (ICC) is facing a significant administrative and diplomatic challenge as Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, remains highly uncertain.
The issue of Bangladesh refusing to travel to India for World Cup matches has become a major “headache” for the ICC, with the situation appearing to complicate further rather than reaching a resolution. Bangladesh’s Sports Adviser, Asif Nazrul, stated that following a formal communication from the ICC’s own security team, it currently seems “impossible” for the national team to travel to India for the mega-event.
Nazrul confirmed that there has been no positive progress regarding the scheduling of matches. The Bangladesh authorities have dispatched two letters to the ICC and are currently awaiting a response to the second correspondence.
According to the Sports Adviser, a letter from ICC security officials highlighted three specific factors that could escalate risks for the Bangladesh team:
Targeting of Key Players: The security report indicated that the presence of star pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the squad could lead to a tense or volatile situation.
Fan Safety and Identity: The report suggested that fans wearing the official Bangladesh national jersey in stadiums could face security threats or cause situational friction.
Political Climate: The proximity of local elections in India was cited as a factor that would increase security risks for the visiting team as the tournament nears.
Asif Nazrul criticized the implications of these security warnings, suggesting that the conditions required for a safe tour are beyond reasonable limits. “If the ICC expects us to form a team without our best bowler, or that our fans should not wear our national jersey, or that we should expect elections to be postponed just to play cricket, then these are the most unrealistic and impossible expectations,” Nazrul told the media.
He concluded that the contents of the ICC’s own security assessment clearly prove that it is not viable for the Bangladesh cricket team to participate in the T20 World Cup on Indian soil under the current circumstances.
