Pakistan blank Malaysia 3-0 to claim U18 Hockey Asia Cup bronze medal
By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistan’s rising hockey stars engineered a perfect redemption arc on Saturday, systematically dismantling Malaysia 3-0 to secure the bronze medal at the Men’s U18 Asia Cup 2026.
Playing under high pressure at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Hockey Stadium in Kakamigahara, Japan, the Junior Green Shirts effectively exercised the ghosts of their grueling 5-3 semi-final defeat to arch-rivals India. The dominant third-place finish also avenged a narrow 3-2 group-stage loss to the very same Malaysian side earlier in the tournament, proving how rapidly this young squad adapts under tournament conditions.
Determined to make amends for missing out on the final—having finished as runners-up in the previous edition last year—Pakistan launched a furious offensive right from the opening whistle.
The aggression paid off just three minutes into the match. Uzair Ahmad broke the deadlock with a spectacular, lightning-quick strike to put the Green Shirts ahead 1-0. While one agency reported the opener as a field goal and another attributed it to a penalty corner routine, its impact was undeniable, leaving the Malaysian defense visibly rattled early on.
Even when tactical discipline was tested late in the first quarter—with Adeel receiving a green card that briefly reduced Pakistan’s numbers—the team’s defensive structure held completely firm.
Pakistan’s relentless circle entries yielded ultimate pressure in the second quarter. In the 23rd minute, the umpire awarded Pakistan a penalty stroke following an intentional foul in the locking zone.
Ice-cool forward Aisam Haider stepped up to the spot, completely deceiving the Malaysian goalkeeper to double the advantage to 2-0.
Defensive Resilience in the Penalty Corner Battle
The third quarter transformed into a tactical, high-intensity battle of short corners. A total of five penalty corners were awarded during this frame—three to Pakistan and two to Malaysia.
However, Pakistan’s defensive rushers and goalkeeper put on a clinical display, neutralizing the Malaysian set-pieces and keeping the scoreboard firmly locked at 2-0 to enter the final stretch.
The final quarter saw Malaysia desperately push bodies forward, leaving gaps in their defensive transition. Pakistan exploited this perfectly in the penultimate minute of the match.
Adeel, redeeming his earlier green card discipline lapse, sliced through the Malaysian defense to net a sensational field goal in the 59th minute. The final whistle blew shortly after, confirming a clean-sheet 3-0 victory.
The victory rounds up a highly commendable campaign for the juniors, who topped Group B with commanding victories over China (3-0) and Bangladesh (5-2) before the semi-final heartbreak against India.
Reacting to the podium finish, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani issued an official congratulatory statement to the squad in Lahore.
“I congratulate our national U-18 hockey team on their outstanding performance and third-place finish in Japan,” Wani said. “These young heroes have shown immense grit, and we are confident they will continue to raise Pakistan’s flag high on the international stage in the years to come.”
