Bangladesh to host 2031 World Cup; No penalties over recent India dispute

By Nawaz Gohar ;  The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released a significant statement following “open, constructive, and cordial” discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The dialogue focused on the future of cricket in South Asia and addressed the unfortunate absence of the Bangladesh national team from the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

In a major relief for Dhaka, the ICC confirmed that no financial, sporting, or administrative penalties will be imposed on the Bangladesh Cricket Board in relation to the ongoing dispute with India. Furthermore, the global governing body explicitly acknowledged that the BCB retains its full legal right to approach the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) under existing ICC regulations, should it choose to do so.

As part of a strategic understanding to ensure long-term stability, the ICC announced that Bangladesh will host an ICC event prior to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2031, which it is already slated to host. The ICC emphasized that granting the 2031 World Cup hosting rights reflects its absolute confidence in Bangladesh’s capacity as a world-class host.

Recognizing Bangladesh as one of the world’s most vibrant cricket markets with over 200 million passionate fans, the ICC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the national team’s absence from the T20 World Cup does not have long-term adverse effects on the sport’s growth in the country.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta remarked: “The absence of Bangladesh from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is regrettable, but it does not change the ICC’s enduring commitment to Bangladesh as a foundational cricketing nation. Our investment in Bangladesh’s cricket ecosystem is long-term and is not defined by short-term hurdles.”

The communique concluded by stating that the ICC, PCB, and BCB remain dedicated to continuous dialogue and cooperation. All stakeholders agreed that the spirit of this understanding is to protect the integrity of the game and maintain unity within the global cricketing community.
