Iran seeks to move World Cup matches from US to Mexico over security fears

By Nawaz Gohar ;  The Iranian Football Federation has initiated discussions with FIFA to move its World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico due to security concerns.

Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian Football Federation, stated that serious concerns regarding the team’s security have arisen following a recent statement by U.S. President Donald Trump.

He mentioned that if the United States cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian team, the squad will not travel there; hence, negotiations are underway to relocate the matches to Mexico.

It is worth noting that the upcoming Football World Cup is scheduled to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Iran’s matches currently slated for Los Angeles and Seattle.

On the other hand, Iran’s Sports Minister also remarked, in light of recent tensions, that the team’s participation could be difficult under current circumstances—a situation that has become more complex following attacks on Tehran by the U.S. and Israel.

However, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) stated they have received no official notification from Iran regarding a withdrawal from the tournament, and for now, the Iranian team’s participation remains intact.

FIFA has not yet issued an immediate response on the matter.
